The 1954 FIFA World Cup was the fifth football World Cup. It was held in Switzerland from 16 June to 4 July. For the first time there was television coverage, and special coins were issued to mark the event. 16 teams (Brazil, Yugoslavia, Franc, Mexico, Hungary, West Germany, Turkey, Korea Republic, Uruguay, Austria Czechoslovakia Scotland England, Switzerland, Italy and Belgium) qualified for the tournament.
Six cities hosted the tournament:
- Basel, St. Jakob Stadium;
- Bern, Wankdorf Stadium;
- Geneva, Charmilles Stadium;
- Lausanne, Stade Olympique de la Pontaise;
- Lugano, Cornaredo Stadium; and
- Zürich, Hardturm Stadium.
The final was played at the Wankdorf Stadium, Berne. The tournament was won by West Germany, who defeated Hungary in the final, 3-2.
